You typed "retreat meaning" into a search bar, and the first page of results gave you philosophy. A planner needs something sharper: a definition you can hold a venue up against.
From a venue's side, a retreat needs four things: overnight lodging, so the group leaves its routine behind; a purpose the group shares, whether deep work or quiet reflection; a food plan, often eaten together; and a dedicated quiet space. Structure is optional. Some retreats run a packed agenda, and some leave the days wide open.
That is also where a retreat splits from a vacation. A resort stay starts to work as a retreat when the venue is built around attention to purpose and connection, with room for quiet. Prices come by quote-only request, so your first email carries a lot of weight. Say plainly what the group is there to do.
Before you read another listing, write down the three needs your group cannot skip. Then look past the pretty pictures for a venue that gives you real separation and room to focus on them.

Merriam-Webster defines one sense of the word as "a period of group withdrawal" for prayer, meditation, study or instruction under a director, and another as a place of privacy or safety. The Cambridge Dictionary describes a period of time used to pray and study quietly, or to think carefully, away from normal activities and duties. Both start with leaving routine behind. That gives you a test for any venue.
Where a resort fits
Merriam-Webster's entry for resort describes a place providing recreation and entertainment, especially to vacationers. That is a different purpose from the one above. A property can offer both. Your brief decides which one you are buying. Write your purpose in one sentence, such as "two days of planning with no phones at the table," and put that sentence in your first email. The reply shows whether the venue read it.
